A Little About Nelson

Nelson is one of the quieter rural pockets of The Hills, but its name carries a surprisingly grand piece of history.

The suburb was named after Admiral Horatio Nelson, one of Britain’s best-known naval commanders and the hero of the Battle of Trafalgar.

There is also a direct local connection to Governor William Bligh.

Before becoming Governor of New South Wales, Bligh served under Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. He later received a land grant in this area and named the property Copenhagen Farm in honour of that battle.

The name Nelson eventually became attached to the surrounding district.

Today, the suburb feels a world away from naval battles and colonial governors.

It is still characterised by rural properties, larger blocks, open space and the quieter roads of the northern Hills.

And that makes Nelson feel rather familiar to us.
