A little about GLADESVILLE, NSW 2111
North Shore – Lower · Sydney Region
Gladesville is a lower north shore suburb of Sydney, located 10 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD.
The Wallumedegal or Wallumatagal were the traditional custodians of the Gladesville area, which they called Wallumetta.
The suburb’s name commemorates the first settler, John Glade, who arrived as a convict in 1791 to serve a 7-year sentence. He died in 1848 and was buried in St Anne’s Cemetery.
Gladesville features some gorgeous views of Parramatta River and the bushland in Gladesville. An unmistakable landmark of Gladesville is the Gladesville Bridge which links the North Shore of Sydney to the Inner West, cutting driving time in half.
When it comes to things to do in Gladesville, they generally fall into the camp of parks and heritage buildings.
Both the St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church and Rockend Cottage are on the heritage buildings front.
Rockend Cottage is a cute sandstone house built in the 1830s, and it once was home to the Australian poet Banjo Patterson. Patterson is the closest Australia has to a national poet, and he wrote The Man From Snowy River and Waltzing Matilda.
Rockend Cottage is now houses the Banjo Patterson Cottage Restaurant, which unashamedly milks the Patterson links. The Banjo Patterson Cottage Restaurant is a fine dining restaurant and a popular events venue. The beautiful sandstone house, combined with the Parramatta River setting, makes this a favored venue for wedding receptions.
The restaurant is in Banjo Patterson Park, one of many riverside parks and reserves in Gladesville. A walking trail hugs the river shore from Banjo Patterson Park, heading around Bedlam Point to the Parramatta River Regional Park.
However, perhaps more interesting are the Glades Bay Native Gardens at the western end of Gladesville, home to Aboriginal rock carvings. One of tese are the carvings of two jumping kangaroos.
While in Gladesville, why not also explore one of Gladesville’s many restaurants along Victoria Road, which serve a variety of foods from Vietnamese, to Indian, to Mexican. Utterly delicious!
