A little about LEICHHARDT, NSW 2040
Inner West· Sydney Region
Leichhardt is a suburb in the inn-west of Sydney, located just 5km from the Sydney CBD.
Leichhardt was initially inhabited by the Wangal band of the Dharug (Eora) people.
Leichhardt is named after the Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, who in the 1840s was praised for his 4,800 km expedition in search of an overland route from southern Queensland to Port Essington. Leichhardt was proclaimed a municipality in 1871.
Leichhardt is best known as Sydney’s “Little Italy” hub. The majority of Italian immigrants moved into the area of Leichhardt after World War II. However, Leichhardt is fast becoming home to a more diverse group of people seeking a better work-life balance.
Leichhardt is a place where family, welcoming European hospitality, and good food goes hand in hand. The laid-back culture of Leichhardt is infused with a distinctly Italian flavour – from swirling pasta dishes to Ducati’s revving it up. Leichhardt is also known for its refined café culture, with cafés in abundance. The oldest café in Leichhardt is Café Sport, which is located on Norton Street.
The main commercial area of Leichhardt is located on Norton Street and on Marion Street, both abuzz with trattorias, cafes, and bakeries.
The Italian Forum, which is located just off Norton Street, is noteworthy for its design seeking to recreate the feel of a Mediterranean town piazza. A pedestrian-only central courtyard features both outdoors and indoors restaurant dining. It is also home to Leichhardt Library which small shops and boutiques surround on the upper level, all overlooked by residential apartments. At the Italian Forum you will find an open-air shopping mall with designer fashions, Tuscan architecture, Indie cinemas, small bookshops, indie cinemas and cosy wine bars add to the European vibe.
During October, thousands of people visit the annual Italian Festa food festival and the Italian Film Festival.
During the Italian Festa Food Festival, Leichhardt’s local traffic is temporarily closed on Norton street and some neighbouring streets. The area is transformed into a substantial European-style outdoor café. Leichhardt’s cultural diversity is celebrated with an International Food Fair, gift stalls, live entertainment and community expos throughout the day.
While Norton Street has retained its status as the place to go to for some perfect pasta, Sydney’s love affair with Asian cuisine has also spilled into the heart of Leichhardt. Numerous Asian-infused restaurants sit side by side with restaurants that boast traditional Italian Nona’s secret recipes.
Pizza and cappuccinos aside, the Leichhardt family-friendly postcode has four primary schools and even more day-care centres servicing the area and is only a quick commute to and from the CBD via either light rail or a network of buses that service the area.
