Ideas to do with your mum on Mother’s Day
When it comes to celebrating Mother’s Day and honouring our mothers, fresh flowers, chocolates, gifts, and thoughtful cards are a standard these days. However, spending time with our mums in a clever way might be the most rewarding thing to do. And you might not even have to pay any, or very little, money to spend some quality time together.
We have compiled some beautiful and thoughtful ideas on how you could create a more connected Mother’s Day with your mum.
- Invite her to high tea
High Tea has something unique, sophisticated, and whimsical to it. Enjoying a high tea on Mother’s Day is something you should do at least once with your mum. You can either make the brews and treats yourself following some ideas on Eat Drink Play, Plan Buy Cook, or watch a video on how to create and style a high tea event at your home. Alternatively, head out to an official tea house. The Urban List and Time Out have compiled a review of the best places in Sydney to have a high tea for Mother’s Day. You can also gift her a tea sampler to go with the experience.
2. Make Pizza together
DIY pizza is a craft, an activity, and a meal all at once! Why not do it with mum on Mother’s Day. Start with making a basic pizza dough; then, everyone gets to add their favourite toppings. Mum gets the first choice, of course.
3. Create your Mother’s Day reading club
If you and your mum are passionate book worms, picking out a book she would love is a wonderful Mother’s Day gift. However, reading together and discussing it book-club style over the weeks following Mother’s Day takes the idea further and makes it authentic. This will keep you connected over the coming weeks, and she will love it. If little kids are in the family, this could be modified to be a read-aloud of mum’s favourite picture books on Mother’s Day. Booktopia, Angus & Robertson and Dymocks have some book ideas to get you started.
4. Watch home movies
And by home movies, we mean your family movies. Dig into your family archives and host a home-movie marathon; whether this involves digitizing old VHS tapes, getting video files off your phone or iPad and onto the TV, get in there and get it done. Mum will get a little emotional seeing how much everyone has grown but thoroughly enjoy it.
5. Go to an exercise class together
If your mum likes to stay active or is a bit of a fitness buff, why not join her in her workout on Mother’s Day. Whether she enjoys Zumba, Pilates, tennis, basketball or simply a brisk walk in the park, do it together! You will both feel the endorphin rush for the rest of the day and create special memories.
6. Craft the perfect Mother’s Day playlist
Finding songs about mothers and mum’s favourite tunes can come together into a personalised playlist. Then put it on during your brunch or dinner. You can either make the playlist for her or take turns being DJ and add alternate picks. If you need help to get started, look at Good Housekeeping’s 40 best Mother’s Day songs list.
7. Play a family board game or complete a jigsaw puzzle
If mum likes to strategize or is a little competitive, play a friendly competitive board game together. And rest assured, you don’t have to let her win just because it is Mother’s Day. Alternatively, complete a beautiful jigsaw puzzle together if you don’t want to get too competitive.
8. Take a tour of historic sites
If your mum loves history, get the family to tour nearby historical sites. The beautiful weather, a notable landmark, and her favourite people in one spot will make her day even more memorable, and it’ll make for some great family snapshots. Sydney.com has compiled a list of historical sites with plenty of ideas to get you started.
9. Take the family on a Mother’s Day bike ride
Deck mum’s bike out with some pretty flowers, and then take the whole crew out and about on a bike ride. If you are looking for some great bike paths around town, have a look at The Urban List, Sydney Uncovered, or Sydney.com
10. Plan a Mother’s Day Picnic
We’re sure any mum would love some fun outdoors with her favourite foods and favourite people all together in one place. Sydney has some fantastic spots to sit down, kick back and enjoy time together. Check Sydney’s favourite picnic spots at Time Out, at Sydney.com or Sydney Uncovered.
