A Little About West Pennant Hills

West Pennant Hills is one of the more established, leafy corners of the Hills.

Long before suburban streets filled the area, this was rural country shaped by timber-getting, farming and orchards. Thompson’s Corner was once surrounded by orange orchards, part of the fruit-growing landscape that characterised much of the district.

Even the suburb’s name reaches back into early Sydney history. West Pennant Hills was originally part of the broader Pennant Hills district, with one longstanding explanation linking the name to English naturalist Sir Thomas Pennant, a friend of Sir Joseph Banks.

Today, the suburb is thoroughly part of modern Sydney, but it has managed to hold onto rather a lot of green.

Cumberland State Forest sits right here in West Pennant Hills, preserving 40 hectares of native forest in the middle of suburbia.
