Annandale is an inner west suburb of Sydney, located within 5 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD.
Annandale is found on the southern side of Sydney Harbour. The Aboriginal Gadigal Clan lived in the area which was a landscape of turpentine trees and iron bark. Physical evidence of human occupation dates back 15,000 years.
Major George Johnston, who arrived on the first fleet ship Lady Penrhyn, named the area after his after his birthplace Annan in Scotland, United Kingdom. His name is still remembered in Johnston Street, Johnston Lane, Johnstons Creek and Johnstons Bay.
Today, you can find many nostalgic wide streets, beautiful century old mansions, heritage homes and shopkeepers who will greet locals by name. Annandale is a highly sought-after suburb that has an old school charm to it. Despite its current quiet nature, Annandale has had its time in the spotlight – once the centre of Sydney’s indie rock scene, Annandale has now retreated back into its charming village atmosphere.

Johnston Street, the main artery, is lined with historic buildings dating back to the 1800s. Quaint boutique cafés and restaurants with a distinct European flavour form a central part of Annandale village, which flows down to Booth Street.
If you go further north along Johnston Street towards the Witches’ Houses, you will find the grand, iconic home, The Abbey. This privately-owned gothic revival house is Perched on the hillside, and has an almost eerie presence featuring arches, gables, chimneys, gargoyles, turrets and a even a tower. At some stage, the house was reconfigured into flats for boarders and working-class families, but it has now been restored back to being a family home.
