A little about PYRMONT, NSW 2009
Sydney City · Sydney Region
Pyrmont is a suburb in the inner-city of Sydney located just 2 kilometres southwest of the CBD and is part of the Darling Harbour area. As of 2011, it is Australia’s most densely populated suburb.
The Cadigal people were the traditional inhabitants of the Pyrmont and Ultimo peninsula called it Pirrama. It appears that they remained living on the peninsula well into the 1830s, with ‘Tinker’s Well’ providing a constant freshwater supply and food sources available from the shoreline and harbour.
The early Europeans visiting Pyrmont were likely to do so by boat. It is said that Captain John Macarthur and his entourage visited here in December 1806, when a spring of natural water at the chosen picnic spot inspired the naming of the place’ Pyrmont’, after a spa town of that name in northern Germany. The spring later became known as Tinker’s Well.
Pyrmont, formerly an industrial area on Darling Harbour has transcended its industrial and working-class heritage, and is now known as an affluten waterfont localen and a popular entertainment destination .
Although a slum area during the 19th century, Pyrmont has been transformed into a vibrant hub of world-class entertainment, business and affluent living. Pyrmont was purchased by John Macarthur for a gallon of rum in 1799. Today Pyrmont is transcending its industrial and working-class heritage being home to award-winning waterfront parks, cutting-edge architecture and A-list venues. It is much treasured for its dining and entertainment as well as for it is for its parklands. At the heart of Pyrmont’s, you will find Union Square, a heritage precinct and a vibrant village filled with romantic sandstone exteriors with trendy cafés, boutique dining and shopping – worlds away from the towers of nearby Sydney CBD.
Pyrmont is best explored by foot. It has a etwork of cliff top walks and stairways connecting a maze of winding streets and apartment complexes. Pyrmont can be serenely quiet considering the number of people who live in the suburb.
However, during rush hour, residents have to be careful before crossing the roads as cyclists commute through Pyrmont from the neighbouring CBD.
The redeveloped wharves surrounding Jones Bay are now a business precinct. Pyrmont has become home to leading brands such as Google, Viocorp, Fairfax Media, Network 10, Thomson Reuters, and Channel Seven.Buses, light rail and ferries connect Pyrmont to the inner west, Circular Quay and Central Station.
Throughout Pyrmont, there are numerous reminders of bygone eras, including public art and converted industrial buildings highlighting the area’s maritime and industrial beginnings.
Tourists and workers from newspaper and TV offices pack the restaurants along the wharf and the Sydney Fish Market. The huge, slick Star casino complex offers further dining options, along with nightclubs, bars and designer shops. The on-site Sydney Lyric stages theatre, opera and ballet.
