The suburb of Redfern is an inner-city Sydney suburb located 1.7km kilometres south of the Sydney CBD.

The recognised traditional custodians of the land of the greater Redfern area are the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation who have a rich culture and strong community values.

The suburb received its name after the British surgeon William Redfern, who was granted land in this area in 1817 by Lachlan Macquarie.

This pocket of Sydney was once infamous for its underground activities but more recently Redfern has been turning heads for different reasons.

Redfern is rapidly becoming a thriving enclave of Indigenous culture with an enviable bar and art scene and a place to find beautifully restored homes within minutes of the CBD.The infamous areas of Redfern such as Eveleigh Street, Caroline Street, Hugo Street and Wine Street, aka ‘The Block’, are undergoing redevelopment and gentrification.

The area of Redfern was the site of the Black power and reconciliation movements in the 1960s and ’70s and holds tremendous significance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Throughout the suburb of Redfern, you’ll find iconic murals and street art in the powerful colours or red, black and yellow that honour this importance.
