The suburb of Redfern is an inner-city Sydney suburb located 1.7km kilometres south of the Sydney CBD. 

The recognised traditional custodians of the land of the greater Redfern area are the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation who have a rich culture and strong community values. 

The suburb received its name after the British surgeon William Redfern, who was granted land in this area in 1817 by Lachlan Macquarie.
